Started playing: Age 9 or 10
Came through Selby Juniors: Yes — with a brief detour to Pocklington for U15s, U16s and Colts, but Selby was always home. Returned at 17 for senior rugby.
Alex Webster, better known around the club as Webbo, has been part of Selby Rugby for most of his playing life — with one small chapter elsewhere before coming back to where he always belonged.
When asked about his rugby highlights, he’s quick to mention scoring and winning at Twickenham — in fact, he’ll happily show you the video if you ask! “Did I mention I’ve scored at Twickenham?” has become something of a catchphrase.
His matchday prep is pure routine: Weetabix, eggs, a can of Monster, five nervous trips to the toilet and a third-party set before heading out. Favourite Selby memory? “Scoring at Twickenham,” of course — “Buy me a beer and I’ll tell you all about it.”
Growing up, Alex admired Will Greenwood, and he credits Sam Weller, his “old centre partner”, for doing all the hard yards. Coaching-wise, he remembers Jacob Robinson’s simple but sharp advice: “Just be better.”
If he could swap places with anyone, it’d be Max Wotton — “He sits and plays PlayStation all day and still brags about it in the clubhouse.” His ideal post-training meal is Grandma’s egg sandwiches, and his least favourite tackle partner? Liam ‘Harambe’ Hogan — no explanation needed.
Biggest joker? Sam Broughton. Longest to get ready? Hola — “too busy having a fag.” If there’s a team night out to plan, James Hunt would have a spreadsheet ready, while Charlie Bramley… probably wouldn’t know where to start.
He rates Bob as the future coach in the making (“great rugby knowledge”), and if the team were stranded on an island, he’s backing Campbell to survive longest — “he’d thrive under pressure.”
For Webbo, the best thing about Selby RUFC is simple: “Family and friends.” He’s thankful to his Pocklington coach who opened county-level opportunities and says if he could tell his younger self one thing before his first game, it would be:
“Don’t worry, it’ll be ok… you’ll score at Twickenham one day.”
How would the lads describe him? “Old, grumpy, miserable.”
His advice for younger players: “Play with a smile on your face.”
And what does being part of the Selby family mean to him?
“Everything. ❤️??”
